Weekly Dragon Update: June 3- June 7

June 3- June 7

June Umbrella Theme

We continue to explore the Umbrella themes each month and students are starting to build their own personal umbrellas – being able to use various strategies to help them deal with struggles they may face in their lives.  Throughout the month of June, we will be exploring the theme of Hope/Mastery. Take a minute to read the attached article that can be found at the link below. It has some great activities for your children around Hope/Mastery.

EQAO

Congratulations goes out to our Grade 3 and 6 students for completing their EQAO assessments. Staff and students have been working very hard all year to prepare for these tests and we are all very proud of their accomplishments. Well done Dragons!

Mission Day

Mission Day is on Thursday!!  This is always a fun day filled with excitement and joy for our students.  Our staff go to great lengths to ensure that they prepare fun activities for the students of the school in order to raise funds for those in need.  We will be supporting the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Free the Children and the Earth Rangers.  Thank you to parents who have already donated items for the day! There will be many activities, food, and items will have a small cost associated with them. Please ensure that your child has sufficient monies to enjoy the afternoon.

Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast

St. Dominic Savio CES would not be the amazing place it is without our dedicated Parent Volunteers. To recognize these amazing people, we are hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on June 13th. Invites to these volunteers will be coming out shortly. Please make sure to mark your calendars!

Staffing Update

Due to our increasing numbers of Baby Dragons entering Kindergarten, our Early Years Division is gaining another class for next year. There will be 4 Early Years Classes in September. Staffing for this position will happen in the next little while. As well, both Mr. Runstedler and Mr. Setler will be back at St. Dominic as the Admin Team for September. Typically administrators are moved after 5 years, but we were lucky to be able to share the news that Mr. Runstedler will be back again!

Grade 8 Mt. Mary Trip

Our grade 8s students enjoyed a fantastic 3 day retreat at Mt. Mary Retreat Centre in Ancaster last week. It was a very reflective, spiritual, and fun experience for all. Good thing they have the weekend to rest up. Thanks to Mr. Ross, Mr. Van Looyen, Ms. Shermeto, Mme Acx and Mr. Runstedler for joining the students on their trip.

Jump Rope for Heart

What a fantastic day for our annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser! We lucked out with fantastic weather and were able to enjoy the sunshine as we supported this very worthwhile cause. And the students had a blast to boot participating in the various activities! Thanks goes out to Mrs. Campbell for her hard work in organizing this awesome event!

Rocket Science Workshop

The grade 6 students from Mr. Kropf’s and Ms. Shermeto’s classes were able to participate in a Rocket Science workshop at the school on Tuesday. They were given lessons in rocket science, rocket building and team work from Mr. Turner. A great time was had by all and the students were thrilled when their rockets went into orbit!

KW Humane Society Classroom Visits

We were also very fortunate to have Mac and “his human” visit some classes last week to help our Dragons learn about Pet Safety. There were lots of great questions and information shared, and all benefited from this great interaction.
