September 25 – 29

Good morning, St. Dominic Savio Community.

It is hard to believe we are starting our last week of September, and that the beautiful season of autumn has arrived! Autumn brings a season of gratitude and Thanksgiving. Our St. Dominic Dragons have another busy week ahead of them, a week to learn and realize how blessed they are for their family, friends and education.

Food Drive

All this week, students are encouraged to bring in food items for the Kitchener Food Bank. For a little fun competition, each class has been given a BINGO card with the hopes that as a class, students can complete the BINGO card by collectively bringing in all the various food items presented on the card.  Items such as…

  • canned tuna, salmon, sardines
  • canned meat (ham, turkey, chicken and luncheon meat)
  • pasta (macaroni & cheese, spaghetti, Mr. Noodles, and sidekicks)
  • pasta sauce
  • rice
  • cans of beans in sauce
  • jam, honey, and peanut butter
  • pancake mix & pancake syrup
  • fruit juices such as apple & tomato
  • cranberry sauce
  • Hamburger Helper
  • cereal-especially Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes

Regardless of what your family can contribute, it is a Win-Win. Your child feels good about helping someone in need and someone in need feels blessed that they have food to eat.

Mass/Liturgy on Tuesday

On Tuesday, students from Grades 3 and up will walk to church for a 10:00 am mass.  For students in our younger grades, Deacon Phillip will come to St. Dominic Savio school and conduct a liturgy in our gym. Please ensure your child(ren) wear(s) comfortable walking shoes and comfortable clothing for walking if they are in the older grades. Parents are welcome to meet us at the church or join in the liturgy back at the school.

Truth and Reconciliation Week: Remembering the Children

“We need to see each child as a gift to be welcomed, cherished, and protected…” – Pope Francis

September 25- 30th is “Truth and Reconciliation Week where schools across Canada will be engaging in age-appropriate educational activities to raise awareness of the residential school system and how its legacy affected Indigenous Peoples and shaped the country we live in today. Truth and Reconciliation Week was launched by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and will culminate in the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Orange Shirt Day) on September 30th. It serves as an annual time to reflect on the history and legacy of residential schools.  The “orange shirt” in Orange Shirt Day refers to the new shirt that Phyllis Webstad was given to her by her grandmother for her first day of school at St. Joseph’s Mission residential school in British Columbia. When Phyllis got to school, they took away her clothes, including her new shirt. It was never returned. To Phyllis, the colour orange has always reminded her of her experiences at a residential school. This day is an acknowledgment of Canada’s past and time to hold hope for a future where Every Child Matters.

At school, we will continue to pass along the message that on September 30th — and every day —every child matters.  Since September 30th is a Saturday, we will be wearing orange on Friday, September 29th.  As a school, we look forward to engaging our students in meaningful reconciliation and learning about Canada’s history of colonization, thinking creatively about the future, and continuing to provide them with opportunities to make a difference.

Rowan’s Law Day

Wednesday, September 27th is Rowan’s Law Day where we will continue to educate and raise awareness about concussions. Have you ever bumped your head or body? We likely all have! In sports and active games, there can be risks involved. Rowan’s Law was passed in Ontario in honour of Rowan Stringer.  All schools in Ontario must have rules in place to support awareness and help coaches, teachers, and parents know when a child has suffered a suspected concussion. It also lets the child know that they should immediately stop participating in physical activities.

Terry Fox Run

Our Terry Fox Run/Walk will take place on Thursday, Sept. 28th. Thank you for those who have donated already. The letter that was sent home or posted on classroom D2L sites provided information about how to donate on the Terry Fox website.

Nutrition For Learning

Once again, our school has partnered with Nutrition for Learning, a registered charitable organization, to provide our students with a nutritious breakfast snack program, following the nutritional criteria of Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services; Ministry of Education PPM150, Canada Public Health and the Catholic School Food Policy.  The purpose of providing a universal nutritional program is to ensure our students are well nourished and ready to learn throughout the school day. Being part of this program has many benefits for all students. Research has proven that students coming to school hungry do not perform well in the classroom, have difficulty concentrating, may display behavioural problems, are less alert and are often lethargic. This program impacts children’s overall ability to learn successfully.  Food will be delivered to the school weekly by order, and then distributed and topped up weekly to each classroom for students to take one or two food items when hungry (helps with those forgotten lunches too!)

Accident Insurance

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board does not provide accident insurance coverage for student injuries on school premises or during school activities.  However, accidents can and do happen.  In addition, some injuries incur medical, dental, or other expenses that are not covered by provincial health care or employer group plans.  Parents/Guardians are responsible for these expenses. Families wishing to purchase Student Accident Insurance can apply online at Home – Study Insured Student Accident.

Clothing

With fall comes a variety of weather conditions that can change quickly throughout the day.  Our outside playground tends to be windy and cool. Layering is a great solution for our students to ensure that they have appropriate clothing to participate fully in all learning activities, including recess.

Please Complete Medical Forms

Please ensure you have completed the necessary forms for any medical perils (anaphylaxis, asthma, diabetes, etc.) and had them returned to the office along with any medication needed so we can update our files.  Thank you!

Teacher emails

Just a friendly reminder that teachers may not get a chance to check their emails throughout the day. They usually attempt to check them before, and/or after school. Please ensure you arrange a pick up plan with your child before they come to school, as messages throughout the day may not get relayed. If it is an emergency message you can call the office. Thank-you.

September 18 – 22

Good Monday morning St. Dominic Dragon Community.

We have another exciting week ahead of us. This week our Intermediate Baseball Team and Junior Soccer Team will compete in a Family of Schools Tournament. We wish both teams the best of luck as they have been faithfully practicing and preparing.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

Our Kitchener Food Bank is in need of our help. Thanksgiving is approaching quickly and many families in Kitchener will need help from the Food Bank to be able to enjoy a blessed Thanksgiving.  We are encouraging students to bring in non-perishable canned items like vegetables, tuna, ham, peanut butter etc…  The food bank is also in need of pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, and individually packaged items such as granola bars, and snacks for lunches. If you can help, please send items to school with your child and we will ensure that your items get to the Food Bank. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Supervision

Supervision begins at 9:00 am. For the safety of your children, we request that your child NOT be on school property until a supervisor is on duty.  For safety, please ensure that your children leave home with ample time to ensure that they are in the schoolyard when the bell rings. Encourage your children to use appropriate crosswalks and walkways. Establish routines at home that will assist your child to arrive on time. For safety reasons, students only on the playground, please. If your child arrives late, they are asked to report to the office to check in. Thank you for your support!

Emergency Protocols

As is typical to the start of the school year, staff have reviewed safety protocols with our students to ensure their safety in the event of an emergency. We have practiced fire drills and will also have practice lock down, tornado, and bomb threat drills. While we emphasize to our students that these are practices, it important that they take them seriously as a necessary precaution.  We have already completed one fire drills and our students were amazing and exited the school in a quick and orderly manner.  Way to go Dragons!!

Lunches and Snacks must be NUT FREE PLEASE

We are a nut-free environment. We have students with life-threatening allergies to nuts and other allergens. Nut-alternative products are also not permitted, this includes products like Nutella and Wowbutter.  Thank you.

Is it Bullying?

Every once and awhile when a student conflict occurs, teachers are asked by a parent whether their child is being bullied.

“Bullying” is ongoing. It is a deliberate misuse of power. It is repeated. It can take many forms (i.e., verbal, physical and/or social, electronic, etc.) Bullying has intent and it is harmful.

When someone says or does something unintentionally hurtful and they do it once, that’s RUDE.

When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they do it once, that’s MEAN.

When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful, and they keep doing it even when you tell them to stop or show them that you’re upset – that’s BULLYING.

Have a super week, Dragons!

Meet the Staff

Hello St. Dominic Caregivers and Parents.

Thank you to all who came out for Meet the Staff Night.  It was a beautiful evening, and it was so nice to see families together enjoying conversation.  For those who couldn’t make it due to previous engagements – we missed you!

A big thank you to our volunteer students who helped with set up and take down, as well as our custodians who ensured our yard stayed clean. Thank you also to the Food Trucks who served us, it added a yummy flair to our evening.

We look forward to more community gatherings in the future.

Have a wonderful weekend!
